Around 20 per cent horticulture expects change in operations
Just under 20% of tree growers, flower bulb, fruit and greenhouse growers (horticulture) expect their operations to change in the short term. This is according to a recent horticultural survey by AgriDirect. For this survey, we spoke to as many as 807 Dutch tree growers, 336 flower bulb growers, 623 fruit growers and 1,245 greenhouse growers.
The central question was: What are your intentions for the near future?

Intentions for the near future
The answers paint a clear picture. More than 80% of the companies surveyed expect to continue as before in the future. This percentage varies by sector, but is stable between 80% and 85%.
In addition, some of the entrepreneurs are actually considering expanding the business. Especially flower bulb growers indicate that they have short-term plans to grow. Among this group, over 11% expect to expand soon.
Change or phase-out
In contrast, a significant number of respondents are considering winding down or even terminating their businesses. Tree growers are the most outspoken in this regard. They mention more often than other sectors that they want to wind down their operations in the coming years.
Finally, a small percentage of companies indicate that they expect a change in the industry in the short term. Business transfer or relocation within or outside the Netherlands also plays a role for a small group of entrepreneurs.
