New research into what farmers really care about

AgriDirect recently supported a graduation research project by Aeres Hogeschool. The aim: to gain insight into the current challenges of Dutch farmers. The research consisted of both qualitative research through interviews and quantitative research using an online survey.

The survey, completed by more than 300 farmers from all regions, sectors and farm sizes, shows that regulatory pressure is perceived by far as the biggest bottleneck. Farmers want less complexity and, above all, better communication with policymakers and implementing agencies.

Because farmers from all corners of the country participated, the survey provides a solid foundation. The results therefore not only give an overall picture, but also show well the priorities within different types of farms.

What concerns farmers

Besides regulatory pressure, other bottlenecks and needs were also identified. The researchers worked with interviews as well as a MoSCoW prioritisation, which allowed farmers to clearly indicate what are ‘must-haves’ for them, and what might be ‘nice to have’.

Insights

  • Farmers are reluctant about expensive technology unless the returns are obvious. Smart irrigation and climate-resilient crops score lower than expected.
  • Farmers from the south of the country value environmental measures more than colleagues from other regions.
  • New farmers (up to 10 years of experience) are remarkably innovative and see more in smart solutions and direct sales.
  • Medium-sized farms (50-100 ha) are more likely to be concerned about market access than large farms.
  • Arable farmers give technology a higher priority than livestock farmers.

What further stood out: most farmers put regulatory burdens as their number one priority. Regardless of age, sector or region.

Why this matters

For policymakers, suppliers and advisers, this is valuable input. It helps make choices and communication more attuned to what is really going on in the farmyard.
