Dairy farmers invest less in renovation and sustainability

13% of dairy farmers have plans to invest in barn

Plans for sustainability and renovation decline

Recent research shows that over 13% of Dutch dairy farmers with more than 50 cows plan to invest in their barns within the next two years. This involves various forms of investment. For instance, 4.5% indicate that they want to build a new barn. In addition, about 6.4% want to renovate the existing barn, while 2.5% have plans to make the barn more sustainable.

Dairy farmers were asked the following question: Do you have plans to invest in a new barn, renovate an existing barn or make an existing barn more sustainable within the next two years?

As can be seen in the graph above, the trend over several years shows a clear development. While plans for new construction in 2024 seem to be stabilising, renovation and preservation are actually declining. This decline has continued steadily for five years. As a result, the willingness to improve existing stables seems to be slowly decreasing.
