Average of 2.8 tractors in use on farms

The average number of tractors used on a Dutch farm is 2.8. This is according to a survey by AgriDirect, in which 12,867 agricultural businesses indicated how many they currently use on their farms.

Overview by sector

The result provides an overall picture of the number of tractors in use within the agricultural sector. This does not specify which type of tractor is used for which activities. Nevertheless, the result provides interesting insights per sector.

For instance, the figures show that fruit growers have the most tractors in use on average: as many as five per farm. This high number can be logically explained because fruit growing often involves small-scale, specialised work requiring several machines at once.

Open farming more, intensive livestock less

As might be expected, farms in the open cultivation sectors – such as arable farming, outdoor vegetable growing and fruit growing – use most tractors. Here, mechanisation is essential for activities such as ploughing, sowing, harvesting and transport on own land.

On the other hand, the average is considerably lower in non-land-based sectors, such as pig and poultry farming. In these sectors, the number of tractors is limited on average to one or even less per farm. This is because daily work here is less dependent on land-based mechanisation.
